Moving On From An Unsuccessful Long Term Relationship
There are many things that can upset your life, but not many more things than hearing that your partner many years wants a divorce. Because of the many changes in your life, you may turn to someone else of the opposite sex for the support and love that you need. These relationships are called rebound relationships.
When a significant relationship has come to an end, especially in marriages that were long term, the feelings of devastation and loss can be tremendous. Some people will turn to another relationship, trying to fill the void that has been left in their hearts and lives. They don’t want to sit alone at night, because it makes the situation much more real.
It is always prudent to take things slow in a rebound relationship. There is likely to be lots of raw emotions on the part of the divorcee, and that can cause real issues. In the beginning phases of the relationship, it may seem like you have found the perfect match that can heal all you pain. Remember that this new person is only human, and can (and probably will, though unintentionally) let you down.
I’m sorry to tell you this, but rebound relationships very rarely last. The main problem is that the person that has just come through the divorce is still dealing with tons of emotions that makes commitment difficult. The healing process just hasn’t happened yet.
Another thing that you should be aware of. Once the divorcee is no longer feeling that raw pain, they may find they don’t need their new partner and would actually be better of without him. They leave this one that has helped them through the divorce healing process, and cause them the same pain that they just came through. It would have been much better for them to have waited a while to make sure that all emotions were cleared.
Study or work on a hobby you enjoy to try to help cope with the grief that you are feeling. When you feel that you are ready to try for a new relationship, make sure that this isn’t just a rebound thing. Look carefully and try to learn from your past mistakes.
Be careful in dating divorced men. They generally will end up leaving you once their needs are met. Also, don’t allow a rebounder to push you on the relationship. You need to know whether the person is with you mentally of still with the other person.
You can make a rebound relationship work if you are both willing to communicate honestly. You can make this relationship work if you are willing to take some risks.
